On December 31, 1986, the DuPont Plaza Hotel fire in Condado shook Puerto Rico. The event was particularly hard for the island first responders. They saw themselves in the position of responding to an event of such magnitude and understood the urgency of expanding the capabilities, tools, and technologies at their disposal.
Shocked by the tragedy, Carlos Riego decided to take control of the reins of destiny for the industry in Puerto Rico. In 1992 alongside his wife Nivia Maldonado, Industrial Fire Products Corp. (now Paladius) opened its doors- and the rest is history…
The Punta de Lanza capsule series is dedicated to documenting this history. From the Puerto Rican minds who engineered the processes and identified technologies that changed the industry trajectory to the heroes who lived first-hand historical events such as the Humberto Vidal explosion in Rio Piedras (1996) to the 9/11 tragedy (2001) and the COVID-19 crisis (2019- ). Punta de Lanza is a tribute to them.
